...She's going to want to take a picture to post on Instagram, too.
Hi, my name is Lillian, and I'm a senior at OU.
I’m majoring in microbiology with minors in French and chemistry. I was born and raised in Edmond, OK, and while my parents moved to Tucson, AZ, most of my extended family still lives pretty close by. I’ve been an avid traveler since a young age-my first trip to Paris was at age 4-and I’ve been in love with travel ever since. I’ve actively studied French for the past 8 years, but I’m still working on becoming fluent.
I’m in the middle of applying to graduate programs for public health, which is something I’ve become really passionate about in the last couple of years. At the moment, the plan is to go to medical school after a 2 year masters program. After that, I’d love to work for organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the WHO, hopefully using my French skills in the process.
My current Netflix obsessions consists of… Glee (I’m sorry, it’s a guilty pleasure), Pretty Little Liars (okay, this is getting worse and worse for me…), Borgia (SO GOOD), and House of Cards (redemption!). The only TV show I regularly watch on actual TV is Archer, and if you haven’t ever watched it, you should because it’s AMAZING, and actually really clever.
I think the weirdest thing about myself is that I love grilled cheese. And yeah, I know, everyone loves a good grilled cheese, but I’m talking like… gourmet, hand-sliced bread, flavor explosion, grilled cheese. I can honestly say that I make the best grilled cheese you will ever have, and I have plenty of evidence to back up that claim. In fact, if I won the lottery, my first move would be to open a gourmet grilled cheese and specialty beer restaurant with my best friend. There would be grilled cheese and beer pairings like with gourmet food and wines (which I also greatly enjoy). I’m a foodie. It’s a wonderful, tasty life.
Spring break 2014 consisted of a road trip with 3 of my best friends, and in the middle of the Petrified Forest National Park, I was dubbed Sleeping Fox. I earned this nickname for 2 reasons: the first being that I love sleeping (seriously, the best), and the second is that my hair is ginger like a fox, and they’re my favorite animal. In my favorite French book The Little Prince, the fox is the wise character that teaches the Little Prince really valuable life lessons, and I’ve always really felt a connection to that character. Foxes are AWESOME.
So… That’s a little about me. Hope you enjoyed learning more about who’s behind this blog!

Ps. My favorite social media app is Instagram, hence the title... Feel free to follow me! @vulpesdormiens
I love the instagram picture you included of the grilled cheese. That one sounds so good it makes me want to have one! I love the idea of going into the public health field. It sounds like a great field to go into and you are clearly passionate about it! I am also jealous about your french speaking ability. I love the sound of the language and everything about it, I have just never had the gift of language, so alas it has been out of my reach.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute, Lillian - and you figured out how to embed Instagram in a Blogger post: super! I'm a big fan of Blogger exactly because it is very embed-friendly: embed widgets, scripts, videos, etc. etc. And that is so great that you have an excuse to visit Tucson now: that is one of my favorite places in the world! And how great that you have had the chance to study French and go to France; French is definitely a plus for working in different parts of the world, especially in Francophone Africa. So exciting! Are you thinking of doing a French-related project for this class? That would be fantastic: there is a little bit of France in the class (La Fontaine, the Heptameron, some French fairy tales)... but of course there is so so so much more, both in terms of French storytelling and also the great French artists who have made mythology their subject. Or perhaps a Storybook about... cheese!!! Seriously: you can find cheese stories all over the world! Or... foxes! Anyway, so many possibilities, and I hope you will enjoy the class!
ReplyDeleteHey Lilian!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, you should never feel guilty about watching Glee! I love Glee and all of its nerdiness! Second, I agree with you, Borgia is great. I’ve only seen a few episodes but I like it so far. Like you, Archer is AMAZING!! I’m glad there is someone else out there who appreciates the show’s wit!(Lanaaaaa!!!)
I think your grilled cheese and beer restaurant is an excellent idea and I would definitely be a frequent guest!
Lillian, great introduction. I feel like I truly have a sense of the person you are. I have a few friends that graduated from Edmond. Shoutout for being a SENIOR!! I'm so excited for May to come! I've been thinking about getting a masters in Health Administration. I would really love to help people and educate people. I feel like my major in Communication and minor in Nonprofit will allow me to truly do that. I do love food! I watch HGTV and Food Network religiously. I'm constantly trying to think of the perfect house to cook the perfect food so I can spend time with great people. It's great that you have passion. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWell you sure know how to multitask! I’m a chemical biosciences major and could not even handle a minor. Good job! I am also passionate about public health and travel. I’m moving to Cleveland this summer to attend dental school. My dad is a pilot, so I’ve grown up with a plane ticket in my hand. I went to Paris a few years back. Joy and beauty. Everywhere. Have a blast with life!
ReplyDeleteHey, Lillian! Congrats on making it to your senior year – sounds like you have a very exciting life ahead of you and that’s so great that not only are you pursuing your passions but you’re also planning on using them where they are so desperately needed (thus Doctors Without Borders, etc). Also, I really like grilled cheese and I’ve only had the basic Kraft sliced cheese with bread so seeing the Instagram picture of the grilled cheese you made looked AMAZING!! Teach me your ways lol
ReplyDeleteWow such a hard major and TWO minors. That is incredible. O MY GOODNESS that grilled cheese looks AMAZING!!! It is making my mouth water. I love cheese and absolutely can appreciate a great grilled cheese. I hope you do with the lottery so you can open that gourmet grilled cheese and beer shop. I also think that you have a wonderful plan for you future. I wish you the best. It is nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteHi, Lillian! Loved reading your intro. First off, I just want to say that I think your future plans sound incredibly cool. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors! I'm also jealous that you've been to Paris. I've always wanted to go! As for the grilled cheese - I'm with you on that one. I love weird grilled cheese extras too, like green apple slices and whatnot. Adds that little extra something to keep it interesting. Oh, and I also loved your cute Instagram pictures! I look forward to reading more of your writing!
ReplyDeleteLillian,
ReplyDeleteI used to live in Arizona also. I actually really enjoyed it there. Both of my parents work in public health so I think that’s really cool that you want to do that. Who doesn’t love grilled cheese? I think that’s a favorite of almost everyone (especially as kids). Your spring break sounded like a lot of fun! Not your typical spring break, but very interesting.
Very interesting nickname! Sounds very mysterious and complex. Anyway, what made you interested in public medicine? Anybody can tell you that's an area with a lot of controversy, so all I can say is "best of luck!"
ReplyDeleteSounds like France really left an impression on you, it definitely did the same for me! I love the older, less universal French culture: lots of interesting history to read about there.
Lillian- Great title! I love those books. I know a couple people who have worked with Doctors Without Borders. They said it was one of the most rewarding experiences in their lives. I’ve never heard of the WHO but there’s another organization similar to Doctors Without Borders, its 1040i. You should check them out. Good luck on your graduate applications! :)
ReplyDeleteI took Cherokee to satisfy my foreign language credits while at OU, which might not have been the best idea. Haha. Understanding a language that is still commonly used today would probably have been a wiser choice, so kudos to you for becoming proficient in speaking French! Your writing choice was similar to that of a blogger, so I thoroughly enjoyed reading this post.
ReplyDeleteHi Lillian! My first trip outside of the United States was also to Paris. Everything is so different there, but I had a great time. I found it really cool that you want to work for Doctors Without Borders because there are a lot of places that lack basic healthcare. House of Cards is awesome and I can't wait for the next season to be released. Archer is one of my favorite shows too and I think it is hilarious.
ReplyDeleteok....so your first line made me feel terrible about my life.....all those fields of study??? Then I continued to read and even though I didn't I could feel worse about my self hearing about your travel history made me wanna take the bottle from your comment page and drink it...but then you through in your Netflix and I felt soooooo redeemed because you left out Marco Polo....I felt as if I was winning just a little...then you started to talk about food and grilled cheese and now I am just hungry...Nice to me you by the way.
ReplyDeleteHi Lillian! Congrats on graduating soon! I love that you're so determined to help the world out!! I'm taking French too, but I'm definitely not that good at it haha. I'm so jealous that you've been to France!! I've definitely been bit by the travel bug! Instagram is probably one of my favorites too! But sadly, I don't take enough pictures. Good luck on your masters program and medical school!!
ReplyDeleteHey Lillian! Dang, you major/minors sound difficult, but super interesting. It's amazing that you've gotten the chance to travel so much! I'm definitely a little bit jealous, but I plan on doing much more traveling once I graduate. Oh my goodness. I wasn't hungry until I saw the picture of your grilled cheese. Seriously, I want one. If you do open up a gourmet grilled cheese place PLEASE let me know! I'll be your first customer!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the rest of your semester!
HI Lillian, it is nice to meet you. I like how you started your introduction with a catchy title and incorporating it into the first sentence. That is so cool that you got to go to Paris when you were four. Also, it is amazing that you are trying to become fluent in French. I have never been out of the country except to the Bahamas. I enjoyed reading your introduction.
ReplyDeleteWow! It seems like you have got a lot going on with a major like microbiology and two minors. I kind of really hope you win the lottery so I can come by your grilled cheese and beer cafe; I love a good grilled cheese, and a beer on the side wouldn't hurt. Right now I'm watching House of Cards, Breaking Bad (finally), and just finished the first season of Marco Polo. All three are very good!
ReplyDeleteHey Lillian, nice to "meet" you! I hope you're having a great semester, although I'm sure you're busy with your major and two minors. Wow, that grilled cheese looks amazing! I'm a huge grilled cheese and mac & cheese fan...so I guess I just really love cheese! House of Cards is such a great show--I haven't had time to watch the new season yet, but I can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteI am a little jealous. I have always wanted to travel and have never had the opportunity to do so but it is definitely on my bucket list. I think that you picture is amazing. That grilled cheese does look so good. My son is currently going through a phase where he only wants grilled cheese so I think I need to learn how to make it differently so I don't get sick of it.Well, good luck with the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteI can’t believe after all this time in this course and throughout the semester I haven’t come across your blog yet. I think that’s super cool you went to Arizona for a while. I’m heading there shortly after graduation for work so I’m really looking forward to it, except for that 115 degree weather in the dead of summer that is.
ReplyDeleteHi Lillian,
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t agree with you more about Archer. The writing for that show is some of the best there is. It does a perfect job of mixing humor with some in-depth jokes that you actually have to think about. I did not know gourmet grilled cheese was a thing before this. I always assumed people just used Kraft single with some wheat bread and called it good. Good luck with your finals!
